Date set for Croatian presidential election
ZAGREB, Croatia — Croatians will vote on Dec. 27 to elect a new president.
The winner will replace President Stipe Mesic, who has served a maximum of two terms as the country’s third president since it gained independence from Yugoslavia in 1991.
The presidency is largely a ceremonial post, but it also serves as commander in chief of the country’s military.
Mesic has been credited with steering Croatia toward the West.
Dozens of candidates have announced they will run for president, including the son of the late nationalist President Franjo Tudjman, who died in 1999; a member of the nation’s largest opposition party; and the leader of the Commerce Chamber.
Key issues will include the fight against corruption and Croatia’s bid to join the European Union.
